Some of these plants are indigenous only on Greece\u2019s largest island and nowhere else on Earth. One of these rare plants may hold secrets well hidden by the gods over time. <\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-4-0\">We believe<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-5-0\"> a legend offers clues <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-6-0\">as to<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-7-0\"> the source of creation, life, and rebirth. Now that you <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-8-0\">are interested,<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"e9fsd-9-0\"> let me share a myth with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Miracle of Keftiu<\/h2>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-0-0\">It was a shimmering Summer day, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argophilia.com\/news\/the-legend-of-glaucus-of-crete-divining-ancient-mysteries\/222421\/\">Glaucus<\/a> was playing <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-1-0\">blissfully<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-2-0\"> with a ball one of the athletes had given him. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-3-0\">Tossing and kicking his toy in and out of the columns of the palace temple, the son of King Minos was a picture of Keftiu health, beauty, and vitality<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-4-0\">. At length, the colorful ball dropped out of sight. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-5-0\">Glaucus raced to retrieve it, down a stairway into the enormous storerooms where olive oil, wine, and honey <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-6-0\">were stored<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-7-0\"> in huge vases or Pithoi<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"efijp-8-0\">. Glaucus pranced down the stairs into the cellar to fetch his ball, and he met the most peculiar sight there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"98hfa\" data-offset-key=\"19h07-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"19h07-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-0-0\">Perched on the edge of one of the open pithoi was a tiny white mouse staring into the mouth a the vessel. There in the center of a pool of golden honey, the young prince&#8217;s ball spun round and round like a floating top. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-1-0\">Puzzled, Glaucus stood and watched the mouse as the mouse watched back, both of them looking in concert at the funny sight of the spinning ball<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-2-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-3-0\">Suddenly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-4-0\">, the little mouse turned to paw at the floating, slippery sphere with his forefeet and fell headlong into the tall pithoi jar<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-5-0\">. The prince of Keftiu seized the moment and ran to assist the little white rodent now in peril. Unfortunately, this large pithoi was twice the height of King Minos\u2019 son. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"98hfa\" data-offset-key=\"fkem4-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fkem4-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fkem4-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"98hfa\" data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\">Undaunted, Glaucus thought fast and ascended a stairway behind the jar so that he could reach in to save the little creature and his ball<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6od85-1-0\">. But, of course, the fates were at play, and the boy leaned in too far and fell head-first into the giant vase. A search <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-1-0\">was carried<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-2-0\"> out all across Knossos and its surrounds, but nowhere was Glaucus. After some days, the desperate king of the Keftiu visited the famous Oracle at Delphi to learn of his son&#8217;s fate. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-3-0\">The oracle informed him and Queen Pariohae of a marvelous creature born amongst the Keftiu<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-4-0\">. The seer proclaimed, &#8220;w<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-4-1\">hoever finds the true likeness of this creature will also find the child.&#8221;<\/span> <span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-5-0\">The creature the oracle referred to was an unusual newborn calf that changed from white to red and then to black<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-6-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-7-0\">Polyidus of Corinth (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-8-0\">Probably<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-9-0\"> the god Asclepius) came to them, comparing the calf with the natural ripening of the mulberry plant<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-10-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"19h07-10-0\">. Descending the damp storeroom stairs, he observed the spilled honey, the ball, and Glaucus\u2019 body inside the pithoi. Minos was overjoyed that his son was finally discovered. Since the Oracle prophesied whoever found him would restore him, the king of the Keftiu demanded Polyidus restore his son to life. The seer protested that he did not have such power, so the Keftiu king locked Polyidus in the cellar with his dead son until he fulfilled the prophecy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t long after the storeroom was bolted shut that a snake appeared between the lifeless body of Glaucus and the seer. Startled, Polyidus killed the serpent with a sword left in the cellar with him. Then, a few minutes later, the strangest thing happened. A second snake appeared in the dim torchlight of the basement. Seeing its mate dead, the second snake retreated into the shadows. After a short time, it reemerged, carrying a strange herb, which brought its mate back to life. So, following the snake\u2019s example, Polyidus used the same herb to resurrect Prince Glaucus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gifts of Paradise<\/h2>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-0-0\">The story of Polyidus and Glaucus has been the subject of many myths and legends. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-1-0\">It was the subject of a lost play of Euripides, his Bellerophon, and of one by Aeschylus\u2019 and Sophocles&#8217; lost The Mantises<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-2-0\">. Today, there is a scant mention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keftiu.com\/magazine\/the-inescapable-mystique-and-magnetism-of-keftiu-religion\/\">this beautiful story<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-3-0\">No one has tried to associate the rare herb, the incantations, or any of the other variables Polyidus might have used to bring the dead back to life<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-4-0\">. I cannot fathom why this is so, given the gravity and meaning of the story. What it? The possibility hammers in my brain each time I recall this fantastic tale. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-5-0\">And the herb, the honey, some incantation <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-6-0\">as yet<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-7-0\"> unknown, begs the ultimate question, \u201cIs a reawakening possible<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-8-0\">?\u201d And what of eternal life, as was the gift of the Garden of Eden? You may <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-9-0\">be surprised by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ep807-10-0\"> new evidence. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.keftiu.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Origanum_dictamnus_2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dittany\" width=\"343\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.keftiu.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Origanum_dictamnus_2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.keftiu.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Origanum_dictamnus_2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.keftiu.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Origanum_dictamnus_2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organic dittany &#8211; Ghislain118<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-0-0\">The Dittany herb that grows wild in Crete, is currently only <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/documents\/herbal-summary\/dittany-crete-herb-summary-public_en.pdf\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-1-0\">suggested<\/span><\/a><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-2-0\"> (PDF) by the European Medicines Agency as a remedy for the relief of cough from colds and mild disorders of the stomach<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-3-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-4-0\">In medieval times the herb indigenous to Crete island <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-5-0\">was used<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-6-0\"> to treat everything from epilepsy to fevers and menstrual cramps<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-7-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-8-0\">Today, scientists are <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10408398.2011.653458?journalCode=bfsn20\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-9-0\">studying<\/span><\/a><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-10-0\"> (PDF) Carvacrol, which is <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-10-1\">\u201ca monoterpenic phenol produced by the herb for biological and pharmacological properties as an antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, spasmolytic, and a vasorelaxant<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-11-0\">.\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-12-0\">Furthermore, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/dittany\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-13-0\">other<\/span><\/a><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-14-0\"> clinical studies suggest Cretan dittany\u2019s high amount of carvacrol and rosmarinic acid inhibited the growth of specific colon cancer cells by as much as 95%<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-15-0\">. It&#8217;s also <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-16-0\">been found<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-17-0\"> out that the phenols also exhibited an antiproliferative effect. Dictamnus essential oil also has a very high antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative value. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-18-0\">Stil, no studies I\u2019ve found have combined Dictamnus&#8217; important compounds with other components<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-19-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-20-0\">And discussion of ritual performances such as might have occurred during the resurrection of Glaucus is rare<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3nsje-21-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6od85-0-0\">\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"98hfa\" data-offset-key=\"6885i-0-0\">\n<h2 data-offset-key=\"6885i-0-0\">Cosmic Circles<\/h2>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6885i-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-0-0\">What if <\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-1-0\">we consider<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-2-0\"> the Glaucus myth as fact? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-3-0\">This seems like a logical exercise if <\/span><\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-4-0\">we consider<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-5-0\"> the young prince having <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-6-0\">been submerged<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-7-0\"> in stored honey for a time<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-8-0\">. Of course, honey&#8217;s curative properties have <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-9-0\">been known<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-10-0\"> for many centuries. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-11-0\">Recently scientists began studying how various types, colors, and viscosities of honey can benefit healing<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-12-0\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6023338\/\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-13-0\">This recent research<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-14-0\">, for instance, delves <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-15-0\">deeply<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6885i-16-0\"> into the immunological properties of honey. And the scientists also discovered unusual regenerative capabilities.
