Caring for a Samoyed

The Samoyed requires a secure, fenced yard 6ft preferred to run and play in; however, they also can do well in apartments provided the owner is willing to put in the  extra effort to exercise. Remember Samoyeds are bred to be active working dogs

Samoyeds need regular grooming at the very least a good brush once a week. They have a double-coat and shed seasonally, males once a year and females after every season.  if you are house-proud and have an aversion to dog hair sticking to your furniture, clothes and carpets, think twice about getting this breed.

They are highly intelligent dogs, but can be difficult to train they do have a mind of their own. They learn tasks easily but tire quickly of repetitive training, and so do better with motivation rather than with correction training methods.  Samoyeds do very well in Agility they enjoy the fast pace and love the positive reinforcement methods of training used in this sport, in particular the food reinforcement.

Samoyeds make wonderful family pets and are excellent with children, they are always ready to play or just to sit and listen, they seem to know when you need a cuddle and are very responsive to their owner’s emotions .

They will alert you when a visitor arrives but dont expect them to protect your property they are more likely to greet the burgular with a lick.

The worst thing you could possibly do to a Samoyed as far as they are concerned, is to leave them in the backyard alone, day after day for long periods of time.  This will lead to a dog that barks, digs up your garden or pulls washing from the clothes line, a lonely Samoyed is a very unhappy dog.  A Sam loves to spend time with their family they are happiest lying at your feet while you work, or sharing the lounge with you as you watch TV, or outside with you doing work such as Agility or Herding for you or even just going for a stroll up to the corner store to get the paper with you, as long as they can spend time with you their family, they are happy.

If you have to go out to work every day and leave your dog behind, then you must be prepared to exercise your dog at least once a day and even better twice a day.  A tired dog is less likely to get into trouble.  Leave toys and a meaty raw bone for your dog to entertain themselves during your absence.  And when you come home from work let them into the house to be with you.

Samoyeds are not for everyone but if you dont mind a bit of grooming, enjoy spending time outside exercising and are prepared to share your home with your dog then they make a wonderful companion and you will never feel alone if you live with a Samoyed.
